November is a very special month to us at the Hero Foundation. Not only is it pancreatic cancer awareness month (a cancer we, unfortunately, know all too well) - but we also celebrate our anniversary. On November 9, 2009, we obtained our nonprofit status & were able to continue our journey of helping families who are struggling with cancer.
Each November, we choose families who are suffering from cancer & lean on us for support and highlight them on our website. It is important to us that you know exactly where your donation is going. We do this for free; no salaries, no paychecks. Below are 5 needy families you can choose from to donate to. They are all incredible families and we are honored to help them this holiday season.
100% of the donations go towards the family you choose.
STEPHANIE WOODS & FAMILY: Stephanie is a 33-year old mother of 5 children, age 17, 16, 14, 12, and 10. She was recently diagnosed with COLON CANCER. Her husband Michael has taken on 2 jobs in the wake of her diagnosis to make ends meet. They are in DESPERATE need of our help. Stephanie's wishes are to relieve some of the stress off of her husband and making Christmas special for her children. To donate to Stephanie Woods and her family, please click here:
KAYE CHRISTIE & FAMILY: Kaye is an outstanding mother of 2 young children who is currently undergoing treatment for stage IV MELANOMA. She has had a tremendous outpour of support, but she still needs our help! There will also be a fundraising event on Wednesday, November 27th for Kaye at On The Border (Great Lakes Crossing). We will post a coupon to our Facebook page (you will need it to make sure your donation goes to Kaye), so make sure you like us! To donate to Kaye and her family, please click here:
PEGGY SCHODOWSKI & FAMILY: Peggy is a 47-year-old single mother of two children, age 19 and14. In September of 2012, she was diagnosed with stage III COLON CANCER. The cancer has recently spread to her liver and ovary. She is now STAGE IV and has been denied benefits. With mounting medical bills, plus caring for her children, Peggy needs our help. She has, with her daughter, created a "bucket list" - and last month she took her daughter to a bridal salon so she could see her in a wedding dress as it is not likely she will live to see her daughter get married. Please donate to Peggy by clicking here:
ZAC LOVELACE: Zac's story is especially heartbreaking - yet inspiring - because he is a fighting cancer at such a young age. Zac is a 17-year-old senior who has been diagnosed with stage II NK/T-CELL LYMPHOMA. His mother, Heather, is a single mom going to school and working while she helps Zac with his courageous battle. Zac has been in the hospital since October 6th fighting fevers & the inability to eat or drink. To help Zac - and to remove the tremendous stress from his mothers shoulders - please click here:
SARAH MAYS & FAMILY: Sarah is a 34-year old mother of 3 kids, ages 13, 9 and 2. She was diagnoed with COLON CANCER in November 2012. She now has a permanent colostomy bag. Her chemo was stopped due to her heart problems, and she has to have the assistance of a walker to walk. She is also in physical therapy, resulting in long hospital stays. Her husband, Robert, is doing the best he can trying to make ends meet, but they are still receiving food stamps in spite of his best efforts. To help the Mays family, please click here:
The Hero Foundation is a Michigan nonprofit organization founded in 2009. We began as a small, grassroots foundation with the goal of helping raise awareness for pancreatic cancer, as well as raise funds towards research. We have since grown to give the majority of our funds to local families who are struggling financially after a cancer diagnosis. After our father, Al Knake, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, we knew we had to do something. We had to join the fight. But we were very clear we did not want our hard work - and your amazing donations - to go to a national organization.
So we started our own organization. For you, so you know exactly where your money is going. Not to our salaries (we do this for free). Not to pay for office space (we have none!) or utility bills. Not for events or fundraisers. Your money goes straight into the pockets of local families who have cancer.
What We Do
What we do is simple - we do the best we can to raise funds for Michigan families. If you are from Michigan (or if you own a television, radio, computer with access to the Internet) - you know Michigan has had its fair share of struggles. It's hard to keep a job without the adding anything else to the mix. 90% of the families we help have lost their jobs due to a cancer diagnosis. Imagine, fighting for your life - all while fighting to keep your home. To pay your bills. To feed your family. To give your children clothes. It's simply not fair.
What we do is we help people. We take someone with the world on their shoulders and give them some relief. We work directly with the social workers at Karmanos Cancer Institute in Detroit, Michigan to identify these families. And we've gone far beyond helping only families with pancreatic cancer. Cancer doesn't discriminate; either do we.
If you or someone you love has cancer, please contact us to see how we can help.
How You Can Help
There are so many ways you can help a local family suffering from cancer. We accept on line donations securely though Pay Pal, and you can get there by clicking any of the Pay Pal buttons on our website. And, if you would like, we can even send you an email with the name of the family your donation went to help.
Other ways we could use your help is by being our Sidekick. If you are having a party, running a race, jewelry part - or any event that has people at it - consider raising money for the Hero Foundation. Have fun plus giving back to Michigan families suffering from cancer - it doesn't get any better than that!
We also accept the following types of donations: clothes, household items, shoes, hats, gloves, bathing suits, coats (spring and winter), makeup, suits, food of all types (even dog & cat food), blankets, etc.
Thank you to all of our friends, family and supporters throughout the years to make The Hero Foundation grow to what it is today.
Don't forget: we are also selling these Hero Foundation / "Cancer Sucks" bracelets for $5.00 each.
Supplies are limited, so get them while you can!
Thank you for your support in helping families during this difficult time in their lives! YOU have made a DIFFERENCE!!!
